The first ever show of The Young Directors Series was in 2024. The production of The Color Purple, directed by Rashawd Ford, was nothing short of extraordinary. The show received standing ovations night after night and was hailed as one of the most moving and ambitious productions our stage has ever hosted. Audiences were blown away by the emotional depth, striking visuals, and outstanding performances—all under the vision of a young director. It was a bold, beautiful reminder of the power of storytelling and the importance of giving young creatives the space to lead.
About the Young Directors Series
At the heart of every great theater is a commitment to storytelling, collaboration, and the cultivation of new voices. That’s exactly what the Young Directors Series is all about—a bold, innovative initiative launched by The Plaza to provide young, passionate directors with the platform, support, and resources they need to bring their creative visions to life.
The series opens the door for emerging artists to take full creative control of a major theatrical production. “Young” doesn’t just mean young in age. It also means young in the amount of directorial projects they’ve had. Participants are chosen based on their artistic vision, leadership potential, and passion for the stage.
From show selection and casting, to collaborating with set designers, choreographers, and musicians, these young leaders are immersed in every aspect of production. The goal is not only to produce a compelling show, but to create a safe, supportive environment where young creatives can stretch their wings, take risks, and grow as artists and leaders.
The stage is set. The lights are ready. And the next great story is just waiting to be told.
